Follow-up on Luke

Thank you for all your comments, emails & calls concerning Luke & his little belly issues!  The devil has tried so hard to get a foothold on my fears through all of this…it’s a constant battle.  I know my God is bigger…and in the grand scheme of things, this isn’t all that big of a deal.  It’s still so hard to see your baby in pain…and especially when you don’t know what is causing it.

As some of you know, Luke ended up with an ear infection in addition to everything else by the end of last week.  He is being referred to the ENT for tubes which I think I am ready for.  I hope and pray it helps him…I don’t want to keep putting him on antibiotics all the time and last winter was awful!  We go tomorrow morning…sooner than I expected but we’re all so ready for our baby to have a chance at being well this fall.

As far as the infections go, all of his cultures came back NEGATIVE!!!  Praise God!  So, no e. coli, no salmonella…and more.  The other side of that means that he does have some sort of allergy or sensitivity…most likely to nuts &/or cow’s milk.  We said good-bye to both of those last week in every way, shape & form.  We’re giving it some time for now and letting his little tummy heal.  There is no rush for him to need any of these right now so perhaps in a few months we’ll try one at a time and see what happens.  He’s starting to take to his rice milk (gag!) and his appetite is slowly improving.

I can’t tell you how much I value your support & friendship.  Knowing that others care & that I am not alone in this is such an encouragement to me.

Now…here’s some proof that our little bear is starting to feel more like his old self again…typical Luke face when he’s not getting what he wants…it’s this & screaming that we’re accustomed to.

He’s a dare devil at heart!  I can always find him climbing up something…Wyatt’s bunkbed ladder, standing on the box of wipes to get to the table, and this is his new favorite…

(sorry it’s all out of focus & the lighting is terrible but I tried to get the picture before he fell off!)

Oh…and this is his new style (you know, when he’s not wearing a Jon-jon! ha!)

Nice!  I think Wyatt was hiding his face in disgrace. Luke’s going to be my naked baby…I can see it now!

So, as you can see…we need prayers & in more than one way!  I’ll keep y’all posted as to how his ENT appointment goes in the morning.  Thanks, friends!

Hi Rebecca! I meant to post a comment earlier when I read your post on Luke's tummy issues...totally lost track and forgot all about that. (My two sassy and busy girls get me off track sometimes.)

McCanless had such a difficult time as an infant and toddler with milk. In fact after several months of screams/constipation/awfulness, we switched to formula, then soy formula, then lactose free, etc, etc, etc...finally looking into Nutramigen, a hypoallergenic formula. (NASTY, but she drank it with no tummy troubles.) I swear it took forever to figure it all out. With her we just had to "assume" she had some sort of allergy. Fast forward to Mary Clare at MUSC...Obviously, she was in the hospital when she began taking my pumped breast milk and after only a week, we discovered lots of blood in her poop. LOTS. After McCanless trial and error, I suggested a allergy to milk protein and they immediately did blood work. Sure enough, she was milk protein allergic. They drank the "liquid gold" Nutramigen for well over 1 year and I transitioned to organic yogurt/cheeses first. It was a very slow process, but I didn't really give them much milk at all. My ped told me to give them calcium in other areas, so that I did. As their tummies grew and became stronger I introduced more and more milk products...eventually, even milk. Surprise, both girls are fine now. They just had "immature" tummies, I was told and outgrew their allergy. ???? Not sure if this helps, but thought I'd let you know!!

There is nothing more frustrating than not knowing or being able to help your screaming baby! You and I both know that far too well. Love you friend. Take care of that cute little tooshy! ;)

Rebecca, I LOVE to see how Luke is growing as Kanyon is just a few months behind him and such a little mischief maker too. For mine it's the doggie door. No sooner do I turn my head than he is outside peering in at me and laughing through the glass door. I am sorry to hear about Luke's ear infections but I wanted to tell you, since I haven't posted about it, that we had tubes placed in Kanyon's ears last Friday and he is doing wonderful. Like Luke, he's been on antibiotics basically non-stop since he was 3 months old and when I went to the ENT he said that he was a definite for tubes. He said that in Kanyon's case it was not germs/viruses causing the infections, rather that the shape of his ear canals did not allow them to drain and the fluid build up would cause an infection. He told us last Friday that when he put the tubes in he had a lot of pussy fluid drain from both ears, which means we did the right thing. I'm so hoping this winter is good for him now! I was a little nervous because as you know we don't want anything else done to one of our children. But, it was only done with gas so he was out, tubes placed and awake in 15 minutes MAX and I was nursing him.

I hope this helps a little. I 'll be thinking of you!

Keisa

PS - I LOVE his little plumber's bum!!
